SSAB Americas is seeking a Maintenance Operator for its Montpelier, Iowa facility.

The ideal candidate will have mechanical and electrical maintenance experience related to heavy manufacturing preferably with focus on overhead cranes.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES

  • Day-to-day preventative maintenance of the plant’s overhead cranes systems
  • Troubleshooting both mechanical systems and electrical systems
  • Mechanical and Electrical maintenance along with related alignments
  • Logging of work into a preventive maintenance system and related work order system

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / FUNCTIONS:

  • The position may work in other areas of maintenance, including mechanical, electrical and hydraulics.  
  • The position requires knowledge of industrial electricity and PLC’s.
  • Know and follow all safety rules and evacuation routes in the area
  • Learn and follow the standard operating procedures and safe operating practices (JSA/SOP) within the department
  • Develop and use sound operating and maintenance skills through the departmental skills progression
  • Work in an operational, hands-on capacity   
  • Operate and maintain the equipment for daily operations in the department
  • Cross train and learn all functions of the department and proficient in each
  • React effectively to unplanned events and deal with conflicting demands
  • Act as a team member

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Knowledge of industrial electricity and PLCs
  • Previous industrial experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Minimum Microsoft Office suite computer skills are required

 

Desirable

  • Associates degree or certificate in mechanical or electrical field
  • Minimum of 5 years of heavy industrial experience
  • Heavy industry  experience with overhead crane systems to include controls, and mechanical components
    NFPA 70E training highly desirable

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb, stand, bend, and to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Ability to work rotating shifts
  • Subject to working near moving parts of heavy machinery and high voltage equipment where the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required
  • Capable of working in high noise environment where the use of hearing protection is required
  • Capable of working at heights and in high and/or extreme temperatures
  • Subject to working in indoor and outdoor environment
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks for extended periods

Employee will frequently be required to:

  • Sit, walk climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Reach above shoulder level and below waist level
  • Use both hands for grasping, fingering, gripping and feeling textures and temperatures
  • Life and or move up to 10 pounds

 

Employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Lift and or move up to 50 pounds

 

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

  • Close, distance and peripheral vision
  • Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  • Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings

 

This employee will work in the following conditions:

  • Extreme hot and cold conditions
  • We and humid conditions
  • Amid fumes, dust, dirt and smoke
  • In confined areas, high places and around equipment in motion
  • Amid noise
  • While wearing personal protective / safety equipment to prevent injury from noise and environmental hazards

 

Position Type – Work Hours – Travel Requirements:

  • Position is full time, hourly and is eligible for overtime
  • Position works rotating 12-hour swing shifts to include days and nights
  • No travel is expected for this position
